Fresh Picks: Exploring Our Local Farmers’ Markets

It’s that time of year again!

The local farmers’ markets will be opening soon as the weather begins to improve.  Shopping at a farmers’ market is a great way to support local farmers, as well as purchase fresh produce to use at home.  At the farmers market, consumers can sometimes find produce at a lower price than at a grocery store.  Farmers’ markets are great for fresh produce but may also be good for your budget.

Vendors at a farmers’ market have a lot of knowledge about the products they are selling.  Farmers love to share their healthy philosophies, and consumers often learn about the practices used to grow their produce. Other vendors often enjoy explaining what goes into creating their products.  Melinda Cater, a registered dietitian (RD) at John’s Hopkins says, “Produce from local farmers has spent more time on the vine, on the tree or in the ground, so you get better taste and more nutrients.  When it comes to fresh fruit and vegetables, the shorter the time and distance from farm to sale, the higher the levels of vitamins and minerals.”

Attend your local farmers’ market this spring and summer. It is a fun and healthy activity for you and your family.
